WATERCOLOR CRITIQUE CLASSES FOR FALL

I will be holding a session of one critique class a month at the Falls Church Rec. Center.  There will be a morning session and one in the afternoon for more flexible attendance.  Registration begins Mon. Aug. 23 for city residents, Mon. Aug.30 for non city residents. The fee is $80 for city residents, and $90 for non city residents for the whole session.

Painting Fall Landscapes
Sept. 15 and 16

Wed. 15     Artists will paint a scene of fall trees using yellow as the dominant color plus the compliment violet.
Thur. 16    Artists will paint a different scene of fall trees using red as the dominant color plus the compliment green.

We will talk about color, color compliments, how to paint the fall woods with interesting trees, grasses and other subjects in a fall scene.  We will try to create an overall mood of the lush color of fall.  We will work wet in wet, using a gator board to staple the painting onto.  Bring regular watercolor equipment and several pieces of rough or cold press 140# D'arches.   watercolor paper.  Bring all the yellows you have, especially raw sienna, new gamboge and winsor yellow.  Bring the reds you have such as Alizarin crimson, winsor red, cad. reds and cad.scarlet plus oranges.  Bring your own photos or sketches for reference material.  Artists will receive individual attention and there will be a critique at the end of each day.

Painting Snow Scenes
Dec. 8 & 9 

Wed. 8   Artists will paint snow on a sunny day.
Thur. 9  Artists will paint snow on overcast days and snowing.

The artists will paint sunny snow scenes, overcast, and snowing.  We will talk about the light on the snow, the color of the shadows as they define snow shapes, and reflected lights on snow.  The artists will paint a sunny snow day, and then on the second day paint moody overcast or snowing effects.  Bring your regular watercolor supplies and cobalt, winsor, and French ultramarine blues.  Bring your own reference material, a gator board, and several pieces of Arches 140# rough or cold press paper.  Artists will receive lots of individual attention.  There will be a critique each day.

WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP AT GREEN SPRING GARDENS HORTICULTURAL CENTER

Painting Mountains
Oct. 9

The artists will learn to paint mountains in perspective and value.  They will learn to express the mass and solidity of a mountain, paint the atmosphere between ranges, and paint snow or rain on the mountains.  Bring your normal watercolor art supplies, several sheets of rough or cold press #140 D'arches paper, a container for water and a gator board to work on and a stapler to stretch your paper.  Bring your own photos and sketches of mountains to paint also bring a lunch.  There will be a demonstration and then the artists will paint while receiving individual help.  The session will end with a critique of the work painted.
